[Food] Porn's thai food

Had dinner at Porn's thai food at Liang Seah Street near bugis after the kiting session with my pals last sunday. As i have heard and seen, this thai restaurant opened by Celebrity Pornsak (He served us rice! =) ).

Unfortunately, my attempts at finding the exact address on google only netted me thai porn search results. lol~ I'll see if i can get the address sometime later.
*edit: 28 Liang Seah Street. Thanks hun!

As with most places i go to for meals, i'll order dishes that are the basic and most symbolic of that cuisine or style of cooking (Because i cant order and eat thatttt much). When i think of thai food...

I think of only 3 things: Pineapple rice, thai curry and not forgetting tom yum soup.

This was one interesting tom yum soup i had in awhile.

The first thing you will feel on the first spoon is a sudden kick of spiciness before tasting the slight sour flavor and freshness of the soup and the ingredients.

I think this soup is really great compared to mild versions else where that seem to wash away what a good tom yum soup is about - Spiciness and freshness.

Next on the list. Thai green curry. Apart from slices of chicken inside, there's actually a wide variety of vegetables and this fruit/gourd that i am not sure of its name. It tastes like a squash and texture is close to one.

In this curry, the first impression of my pals was the strong aroma of thai basil leaves. Some may like this fragrance while some people might find it slightly on the strong side and not what they might expect from toned down versions we get else where. I however find it pleasantly delightful and tasty curry~!

Last but not least is pineapple rice. Served in a hollowed out pineapple, sprinkled with generous amount of pork floss and cashew nuts.

In the rice, small cuts of pineapple and raisin sweeten your taste buds with each bite like discovering hidden surprises. At the bottom of the rice, 4 pieces of medium size shrimps lay hidden too.

All in all i found this pineapple rice slightly average in the taste department, the serving might be slightly insufficient for bigger eaters in my opinion. I think that its slightly too sweet for my taste buds, missing a little on the savory side. But i still found it pleasant and enjoyable.

Main points
-Prices slightly high but still acceptable for the quality of food
-Food tastes authentic and spicy hot!
-Nice bright and comfy interior design

Points: 6/10

Conclusion: Going back for more~!

Well i didnt intent to visit Ichiban Boshi to review their food, merely an accident cause my two guests decided Peranakan food was out of the list. Besides... i was more than ready to tuck in to my "Don-Don Wazen" set. Sad reason for the lack of pics for this "review" lol.

Don-Don Wazen set

  • Salmon sashimi bowl- Love this dish as salmon was drizzled with chilli padi and sesame oil. Subtle taste and flavor blends well with the sushi rice's sweet vinegar. Like the balance of taste for this one :lick:

  • Unagi rice bowl- Sorry, just too yummy to photograph it as it was too tempting to east asap. Unagi was grilled till tender with teriyaki sauce. Top up with egg and onions on the rice. Zan ah~!

  • Tempura- Standard prawn, vegetable tempura (Lady's finger, lotus root, Sweet potato). Was crispy and light but personally i think its just okay~ Nothing to complain about but nothing to commend about too.

  • Chawamushi- MMmmmm mmmm hot and juicy steamed egg custard. Every mouth food explodes with taste of fresh chicken stock.

I was just enjoying myself with the huge variety in my set. Poor guests thinking they should have ordered this set too lol.

Damage: $18+ (Considering the variety of food and quality i got, i think it was pretty worth it!)

Score: 5.8/10
Pleasant food, however service might need a little polishing as we were seated at balcony seats but the waiter and waitress were inside the air-con area despite plenty of waving and hoping they will check up on us. Note: Curry dishes might be slightly stronger tasting to some~

I'll be back to try something else next time!

Plus: Guest number 2's beef wazen

[Food] Old Hong Kong Tea House

48 Joo Chiat Road (S)427371
427371

Visited Old Hong Kong Tea House near Katong area for Hong Kong cafe style food. Vaguely remember seeing this TV being recommended for food lovers and its near my home so lets get this out of my list of places to try!

For starters, the $4.50 carpark fee was ouch...

To order food, you have to fill in paper order forms with a pencil just like most Hong Kong cafe restaurants. One would observe that there is a huge range of food to order from including classics and snacks. Our order was :

  • Crispy roast pork
  • Fried instant noodles with XO sauce (Recommended by the cafe)
  • Baked cheese rice
  • Xiao long bao

Food comments:
  • Roast pork - Served with mustard. It was only slightly crispy but not as fresh as i thought it could be. Taste was alright but honestly this isnt worth the $9. I have had better roast pork for the same price.
  • Fried XO instant noodles - This mixture of stir fried noodles resembled more like Hong Kong fried noodles you get at a tze char store. The mixture of onions, sliced pork, egg, been sprout and the noodles tasted really average. The XO flavor was no where to be detected thus making it mediocre at best. Not worth another 9 bucks for this portion.
  • Baked rice- Was surprisingly moist in the middle. Accompanied with slices of chicken and cheddar cheese. But then again, my partner and i fail to justify its $9.80 price tag as you guessed it; its really just standard hk cafe food you get everywhere.
  • Xiao long bao - As per expert advice, this XLB at $4 a serve was not the best she tried. It was slightly on the salty side but other than that i can't really call it fantastic either...

Final Verdict - 4.5/10 (Was 5/10 but minus 0.5 for expensive parking and food) <>

We are not going back. Need i say more? It is expensive and the food only taste okay. Do tell me if the other items there taste better cause the prices ain't justified for me to try again.

Might be worth a visit if it was cheaper and you don't mind okay food only. Just go visit the usual Hong Kong Cafes you are all familiar with. Your wallet and tummy will thank you for doing so.

ps: yeah my photo's WB is fugged up lol~ Lazy i am~
